There are times when creativity begins with an idea.

You can hear a piece of music in a language you do not understand and still feel sadness, joy, longing, tension, excitement or hope.

For creatives, those emotional connections are incredibly powerful.
They are reminders that our best ideas do not always have to come from searching outside ourselves.
Sometimes the idea is already inside us.
Music simply helps us hear it.
Put On the Music and Stop Trying So Hard
The next time you feel creatively stuck, try something simple.
Choose a piece of music that means something to you.
Put the phone away.
Stop thinking about what you are supposed to create.
Listen.
Then pick up your pencil, brush, camera, instrument, notebook or design tool.
Do not begin with the question:
“What should I make?”
Instead ask:
“What am I feeling?”
And create from there.
You may be surprised by what appears.
